returning to work

Tomorrow morning, 7am, I report for my shift.  It’s been 10 weeks since the last time I worked and while I technically still have 2 more weeks I’m legally allowed to take off, I think I’m as ready as I’ll ever be to head back.  It feels like any other time I’ve returned from a vacation or long weekend; a major case of the “i-don’t-wanna-go”’s but nothing earth-shattering.  Noah will be a stay-at-home dad for as long as we can afford it (hopefully through the remainder of his schooling) so at least at this point I’m not having any daycare/child care anxieties.  Except, well, I’m terrified that all of my hard work getting Johnny onto a schedule for sleeping and eating might go out the window but I’m just going to trust that he’ll do his best to respect the work I’ve put in for the last 9 weeks.  We’ll see what happens.

Another reason why I don’t think I’m too anxious or sad is that I only work half of the days in a week/month/year.  When I do work I won’t see him much.  I will maybe get to snuggle him in the morning if he’s up but then I won’t be home until it’s time for his bath and bedtime routine.  On the days I’m off though I’ll have all day to play with and snuggle my little monster.  This week I will work Wednesday and Thursday but then I won’t work again until Monday.  Pretty nice work schedule really.

This morning I tried on my pre-pregnancy work clothes and was relieved that they still fit and looked good.  Well, as “good” as one can look in khakis and a polo shirt, that it.  I was a little anxious just because they are clothes that need to fit well and not be too tight or too loose and sine the last time I wore these clothes, I have gained and lost 26 pounds of baby weight (horray for stretchy, loose tummy skin) and then have gained around 8-14 (depending on the day/scale) pounds of “I’ve done little but sit on my butt for all of maternity leave” weight.  Having a baby in December, in an area that is cold, gross, wet, snowy, etc. in the winter is just not a good idea.  I’ll plan the next one better so I can deliver in like March or April maybe.

Tomorrow morning it’s off to work I go.  Wish me luck.
